Avocado Toast

To start off 2020, we went with Avocado Toast for the #stuffwithsvetfoodchallenge!

January signifies a new year, new beginnings, starting over, resolutions, being healthy…etc etc. That being said, I wanted to review something healthier! December we reviewed creme brulee, in the fall we did french onion soup and pumpkin spice lattes, it was getting a little heavy lol. I thought something fresh and healthy would be the way to go. And I mean, who doesn’t love avocado toast. It’s the basic white girl food am I right 😉

I was a little hesitant with how this particular challenge was going to go since Avocado Toast is pretty simple to make. It’s just some avocado on some toast right? How hard can it be? Wrong! It’s actually easy to mess up! Let me tell you the basics of Avocado Toast:

  • the bread: The bread matters guys. You can’t just slap avocado on top of any slice of bread. I mean you can, but it’s not as good. My favorite is sour dough bread that is lush and fresh. And of course, it needs to be toasted.
  • the avocado: Avocados are tough because when you buy them at the grocery store they tend to be rock hard. You buy them, take them home and wait and wait for them to ripen and then all of a sudden, you blink, and they’re over ripe and you cut them open and they’re brown lol. Finding the perfect avocado makes or break Avocado Toast.
  • salt: Don’t serve me an Avocado Toast that isn’t salted. I mean I love avocado but salt makes all the difference. Other toppings are great too like pepper, fresh herbs, olive oil, red pepper flakes, or even a balsamic drizzle! But it 100% needs salt. Sea salt.

Let’s review where we went:

Curious:

Our first stop was Curious Cafe. Curious is an urban open styled restaurant in downtown Kelowna. Their Avocado toast presentation was beautiful – all their dishes are quite decadent with a European twist. I was pleasantly surprised how big the portion was as typically Avocado Toast is a smaller dish/snack. I’ll also enlighten you that it is part of their Breakfast menu, with only being available until 2pm. Their Avocado Toast is zatar spiced avocado served on two yummy slices of sourdough bread, alongside a fresh tomato and cucumber salad. It was super tasty as the avocado spread had lots of flavor. The spread texture was very very smooth, no avocado chunks whatsoever and encompassed a darker green color. The salad was very bright and fresh and was nice to have along side it. If I had to critique, I would say it was a little oily for me. As mentioned above, I love olive oil but I think a little goes a long way. I also prefer a bit of a chunkier avocado spread for my Avocado Toast, but that’s my preference. All around a great rendition of Avo Toast!

Sprout:

Sprout is a bakery/coffee shop also located in Downtown Kelowna. Their Avocado Toast variation was smashed avocados on their home made sourdough bread topped with feta cheese and sprouts. I thought it was ironic that their topping were sprouts, when they’re called “Sprout” lol. This avocado texture was my favorite out of all the avocado toasts. I personally like my avocado texture to be chunkier rather than smooth. However, I found the bread really tough to bite into. With Sprout being a bakery, I thought they would’ve had the best bread. The choice of bread made the eating experience quite messy. In terms of taste, it tasted very lemony and the sprouts gave it some nice freshness. The portion was a lot smaller compared to Curious, but this made sense as Curious is a restaurant while Sprout is a bakery/cafe.

Bread Co:

Our last review was at Bread Co. Bread Co. has two locations in Kelowna; we reviewed at the Downtown location. Again, their variation of Avocado Toast was very different from the others. Their toast consisted of fresh avocado on top of toasted artisan toast, finished with diced tomatoes, sriracha mayo drizzle, and a poached egg. The egg was cooked perfectly, running down the side of the toast. I liked the tomatoes on top as it gave some brightness as well as texture. The avocado spread itself was very smooth, and served quite thinly on the bread. The sriracha mayo gave some really nice flavor but I thought the avocado spread itself could’ve used a little salt and pepper.

To summarize, all the Avocado Toasts were very different which always makes the comparing more fun. They were all good and it totally comes down to preference, especially in terms of how you liked your avocado texture.

CURIOUS!!!

It was interesting because I did a poll on my Instagram Stories asking you guys who you thought would be the winner, and most of you guessed it. Curious takes it!

Curious knocked it out of the park with flavor. They were the first place we went to and they set the bar very high. Their Avocado Toast was seasoned perfectly, the presentation was 10/10, and the bread was on point.

Thanks for tuning in and we’ll see you guys in February for our next #stuffwithsvetfoodchallenge!
