Pizza

Welcome to the first StuffwithSvet Food Challenge HOME EDITION!

To honor social distancing as a result of covid-19, I decided to review take-out pizza from my apartment with no guest judge.

If you read my last food challenge blog post, you would’ve seen that I wasn’t planning on doing a challenge for the month of April due to covid. However, a bunch of you were suggesting to do a take-out version so I thought you know what, why not! I picked three different local pizza places in Kelowna as I know they need our help during this difficult time since most restaurants are closed or are offering take-out only.

The three restaurants I chose were Papito’s, Aroma, and Hansen’s Pizza.

My favorite type of pizza is Vegetarian Greek Pizza so all the pizzas I tasted were greek version. That being said, there are hundreds of toppings out there to choose from so I still judged the pizza as a whole.

Before we dive into in, let’s talk about what makes a good pizza.

-crust/dough – a good slice of pizza starts with the dough. Nothing is worse than crust that is too hard that you don’t end up eating.

-pizza sauce – pizza sauce is typically tomato based sauce. The sauce is crucial as it binds the pizza together. It absolutely needs to be home made!

-toppings – whatever you’re having, you want fresh ingredients. No old wilted vegetables and cheese that overpowers the pizza and makes it too greasy.

Now here we go!!!

Papito’s:

Papito’s has three different locations. One on Pandosy (where I ordered from), Kettle Valley, and Lake Country. The pizza I got was The Greek Getaway: olives, green pepper, onion, fresh tomato, mozza, feta and tomato sauce. The crust is the perfect denseness – not too thick not too thin and nice and crisp. The pizza doesn’t fall apart, all the toppings stay on which is essential. The pizza sauce was a nice tangy taste, not too sweet how some pizza sauce can be. It was all around a delicious pizza! I remember thinking this was going to be a hard one to top. And lastly, it wasn’t too “heavy”.

Aroma Pizza:

I had never been to this place my whole life and I was born and raised in Kelowna! I’m sure glad I discovered it now because this place is a little gem in Glenmore. I thought this pizza had the most beautiful presentation. The way the tomatoes were sliced and placed on top made it look so decadent. It also looked so perfectly balanced, like it was made by an artist. The pizza I ordered was the Grecian: onions, tomato, green pepper, black olives, and feta. It tasted like real authentic Italian pizza. The dough was probably one of my favorite crusts I’ve ever had. It almost tasted buttery. The toppings also tasted so fresh, like everything was freshly cut and made to order.

Hansen’s Pizza:

Hansen’s Pizza is located in the Lower Mission of Kelowna. Their pizza was also very good. I ordered the Tuscany pizza: tomato/pesto sauce, spinach, roasted garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, onions and feta. I loved that the sauce was a hybrid of tomato AND pesto. I don’t know about you but I love pesto, it gives so much flavor. The stand out for me was the roasted garlic. Sometimes when you order garlic on your pizza, you don’t taste it – not the case here! There were so many big chunks of garlic which made the pizza so yummy. The pizza itself came with a bread roll in the middle which was fun. This pizza was also by far the cheesiest out of all of them so if you’re a cheese lover, this is the way to go!

So who had my favorite pizza?

I can’t pick!

All the pizzas were SO good that there was no way I could pick only one favorite. Honestly, all the pizzas tasted amazing and the owners/customer service were fabulous too. I encourage you to check out ANY of these local beauties. Especially during this pandemic as they are small businesses and need our support!

Until next time!
